BB Resteal

BB Resteal

Term: Big Blind Resteal BB Resteal The big blind player responds to a steal raise from the small blind or button by re-raising 3bet to contest the pot and blinds.

Overview

BB Resteal is a common preflop strategy in Texas Hold'em, typically occurring when action folds to the small blind or button, where these positions may steal blinds with a wide range (i.e., raising to attempt to take down the blinds directly). The Big Blind player (BB) counters by 3-betting (reraise) to punish the stealer's wide range and reclaim the initiative.

Strategy Principles

  • Counterattack from a positional disadvantage: The big blind is the worst position postflop, so simply calling a steal is often unfavorable. By restealing, the big blind forces the opponent into a range they must defend, and if the opponent folds, the big blind wins the pot directly.
  • Range advantage: The big blind's resteal range typically includes strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) as well as hands with good blockers that reduce the stealer's fold equity (e.g., Ax, Kx, small pairs). These "blocker hands" decrease the likelihood that the opponent holds a strong hand, increasing the success rate of the resteal.
  • Frequency adjustment: Restealing frequency depends on the opponent's steal frequency and fold-to-3bet rate. If the opponent steals often but folds less, reduce restealing; conversely, if they fold frequently, increase restealing.

Typical Scenarios

  • Opponent range: Button or small blind players raise with roughly 40%-60% of starting hands. The big blind can 3-bet resteal with about 10%-15% of hands.
  • Bet sizing: The resteal raise is typically 3-4 times the pot (e.g., if opponent raises to 3BB, the big blind resteals to 9-12BB), adjusted based on stack depth.
  • Trap awareness: Against tight-aggressive opponents or those who are very strong postflop when calling a 3bet, reduce restealing with weaker hands.

Notes

BB Resteal requires flexible application based on opponent tendencies, stack depth, and table image. Overusing resteals can lead to frequent 4-bets or being called and facing difficult postflop situations. In tournaments, also consider ICM pressure, avoiding risky moves near the money bubble.
