BB VPIP (Big Blind Voluntarily Put in Pot) is a poker statistic that measures how often a player actively contributes chips to the pot while in the big blind (BB). It includes any call, raise, or re-raise made voluntarily, but excludes the forced blind payment and checking (since checking in the BB is not voluntary). The formula is: (Number of hands where the player voluntarily put money into the pot from the BB) / (Total number of hands in the BB).

Importance in Strategy

BB VPIP is a key indicator of a player's blind defense tendencies and overall range from the BB. A high BB VPIP (e.g., > 40%) suggests a player defends their blind loosely, calling or raising with many hands. A low BB VPIP (e.g., < 20%) indicates a tight player who folds most of the time unless they have a strong hand. This statistic is often used in conjunction with PFR (Preflop Raise) from the BB to distinguish between passive calling and aggressive raising.

Typical Ranges

In a typical 6-max cash game, a solid reg might have a BB VPIP around 25-35%, depending on the game dynamics and opponent tendencies. Tournament players often have lower BB VPIP due to ICM considerations. Heads-up (HU) specialists usually have higher BB VPIP (40-50%) because position matters less and blind defense is crucial.

Strategic Implications

• Against a high BB VPIP player: They are likely to call with marginal hands. You can exploit them by value-betting thin and bluffing less often postflop, as they will call frequently. Preflop, you can open wider from the cutoff or button to pressure their wide range.
• Against a low BB VPIP player: They fold often from the big blind. You can steal their blind aggressively with a wide opening range, but be cautious if they do defend, as they likely have a strong hand.
• Your own BB VPIP: Adjust based on opponents. In a soft game, you might defend more liberally; against tough opponents, stick to stronger hands. Note that position is a disadvantage from the BB, so calling too wide can lead to postflop difficulties.
