Break Time

Break Time

A scheduled pause during a poker tournament or cash game session allowing players to rest, refresh, or discuss strategy.

Definition and Purpose

Break Time is a designated period during a poker event when play is halted so participants can take a breather, use restroom facilities, grab food or drinks, or decompress. In tournaments, breaks are typically scheduled after a set number of levels (e.g., every 60–90 minutes) and last from 5 to 20 minutes. Longer breaks, such as dinner breaks, may last 30–60 minutes. The primary purpose is to maintain player comfort and focus over long sessions, especially in multi-day events.

Scheduled vs. Unscheduled Breaks

Most tournaments have fixed break times announced in the structure sheet. These are mandatory for all tables; play resumes simultaneously after the break. Cash games operate differently—players can take an unscheduled break by leaving the table (missed blinds may apply depending on house rules). In tournaments, unscheduled breaks are not permitted; leaving mid-level may result in being blinded off.

Rules During Break

  • Players must remain away from active tables.
  • Cardrooms may seal the deck or lock tables during breaks.
  • Discussions of hand history or strategy are allowed but often discouraged in public areas to avoid collusion concerns.
  • Smoking/vaping and phone use are typically restricted to designated areas.
  • In online poker, break times are strictly enforced; players are automatically sat out and may be blinded if they do not return.

Strategic Considerations

Break Time offers a chance to evaluate your stack, assess opponents, and adjust strategy. Many players use breaks to review hands, take a mental reset, or manage tilt. In live tournaments, a longer dinner break can be used to recharge or discuss ranges with friends (if allowed). However, overanalyzing during breaks can lead to confusion; staying relaxed is often more beneficial.
