Overview
In no-limit hold'em tournaments or cash games with short stacks, BTN 10bb Resteal refers to a specific re-stealing scenario. When the effective stack is around 10 big blinds (bb), the button player's resteal range becomes critical because of the stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) and the threat of being committed if called.
Concept
A resteal is a raise (typically a 3-bet) after an opponent has opened the pot, intended to exploit that opponent's wide opening range. The button is a prime position for restealing because it acts last postflop (if called) and can apply maximum pressure. At 10bb stacks, the opponent's open raise often commits them to call a shove, so the resteal is often an all-in. The button must balance their resteal range with hands that perform well against a calling range, typically small pocket pairs, suited aces, and some broadways, while also including some premium hands for value.
Range Considerations
A typical 10bb BTN resteal range might include: all pocket pairs (especially suited connectors if the opponent folds often), A2s+, A7o+, K8s+, KTo+, Q9s+, and JTs. However, this range adjusts based on the opponent's fold-to-3bet tendencies and their open range. If the cutoff opens with a wide range, the button can resteal with a linear range. If the cutoff is tight, the button may reduce bluff resteals. ICM (Independent Chip Model) factors in tournaments make some hands less profitable due to elimination risk.
Execution
With 10bb, the button often shoves all-in to maximize fold equity. The size of the resteal should be large enough to force the opponent to fold weak hands (often 2.5-3x the open, or all-in). A smaller raise might allow the opponent to call with a wider range and see a flop, which is less desirable for the restealer. The decision hinges on the opponent's likely opening range and their calling range vs. a shove.
Strategic Importance
Mastering the 10bb resteal from the button is a key short-stack skill. It allows the button to accumulate chips when the blind levels are high. Many intermediate players overfold to 3-bets, making restealing profitable. However, against observant opponents who wide-call, the button must tighten their range. It's a high-variance play but necessary for a balanced strategy.
Example
In a tournament blinds 500/1000 ante 125, effective stack 10,000. CO opens to 2,500. BTN with 10k chips can shove all-in with 55+ or A9s+ as a resteal, expecting folds often enough to show immediate profit. If called, these hands have decent equity against a typical calling range of 88+ or AJ+.
