BTN 30bb Resteal
BTN 30bb Resteal
Term: BTN 30bb Resteal When on the button with effective stacks of about 30 big blinds, a re-raise against an opponent's blind steal attempt.
Concept
BTN 30bb Resteal is a common preflop strategy in Texas Hold'em, specifically referring to re-raising the blind steal raise from an earlier position (usually from the CO or earlier) when on the button (BTN) with an effective stack of about 30 big blinds (bb), in order to win the blinds and dead money.
Principle
- With a shallow stack (30bb), the button has position advantage and good pot odds for a resteal.
- The opponent's steal range is usually wide, containing many weak hands; a resteal can force them to fold and win the pot directly.
- If the opponent calls, the low stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) postflop makes it easier for the button to shove or make a continuation bet.
Typical Range
In GTO strategy at 30bb depth, the button's resteal range typically includes:
- Value hands: TT+, AQ+ (sufficient equity against the opponent's continuing range)
- Bluff hands: A2s-A5s, KQo, medium suited connectors (e.g., 87s), etc., which have blocker effects
- Balance is important to avoid being exploited by frequent 4bets.
Considerations
- Resteal frequency should be adjusted based on the opponent's steal tendencies: increase against frequent stealers, decrease against tight players.
- When stack depth deviates from 30bb, strategy should be adjusted: deeper stacks make resteals riskier, shallower stacks may warrant a direct shove.
- Consider the possibility of a squeeze from players behind (the blinds) to avoid getting involved in multi-way pots.
Example
Assume the CO opens to 2.5bb, the BTN holds A♦5♦ with an effective stack of 30bb. The BTN re-raises to 6.5bb. If the CO folds, BTN wins 3.5bb (dead money). If the CO calls, the pot postflop is about 14bb with 23.5bb remaining, and the BTN can continue to apply pressure.
