BTN Fold to Check-Raise
BTN Fold to Check-Raise
This is typically used as a statistical metric to analyze a player's tendency against check-raises.
Overview
BTN Fold to Check-Raise is a statistic in poker tracking software that measures how often a player folds when they are on the button (BTN) and an opponent checks and then raises on the flop, turn, or river. The metric is typically expressed as a percentage, e.g., "BTN Fold to Check-Raise = 45%" means the button player folds 45% of the time when facing a check-raise.
Calculation
Assume the button player faces a check-raise from an opponent 100 times and folds 45 times; the stat is 45%. Note: This stat only covers passive situations where the button faces a check-raise, not when the button bets and then faces a raise (that would be Fold to Raise).
Strategic Meaning
- High fold rate (e.g., >60%): Indicates the button player is prone to folding against check-raises. Opponents can exploit this by using check-raises, especially with air or semi-bluffs.
- Low fold rate (e.g., <30%): Shows the button player tends to call or re-raise. Opponents should reduce check-raise bluffs and use more value hands for check-raises.
- Balance considerations: In GTO (Game Theory Optimal) strategy, the button, as the pre-flop raiser, should not overfold to check-raises to prevent being exploited by frequent bluffs. Typical GTO ranges are 35%-55%, but specific values vary based on board texture, bet sizing, etc.
Influencing Factors
- Board texture: On wet boards (e.g., straight or flush draws), the button is more likely to hold drawing hands, lowering fold rates; on dry boards, the button has more air, increasing fold rates.
- Bet sizing: Larger check-raise sizes usually lead to higher fold rates from the button.
- Player type: Tight-passive players (nitty) have higher fold rates; loose-aggressive players (LAG) have lower fold rates.
- Position: The button has positional advantage post-flop, so its fold rate to check-raises is typically lower than that of other positions.
Practical Application
Players can use HUD (Heads-Up Display) to observe an opponent's BTN Fold to Check-Raise stat and adjust their own check-raise frequency when facing the button. For example, against opponents with high fold rates, increase check-raise bluffs from the button; against low fold rates, tend to check-raise with strong hands. Additionally, when you are on the button, maintain balance to avoid being exploited with predictable patterns.
