BTN Preflop Float Wet

The strategy of limping preflop on the button and then floating on a wet flop using positional advantage.

Strategy Principle

This term describes a float strategy in a specific scenario: the player in the button (BTN) position chooses to limp or call a raise preflop to enter the pot, then on a wet flop (e.g., connected boards that could make straights or flushes), they take a float action. Float refers to calling an opponent's bet on the flop with the intention of betting on the turn to take down the pot when the opponent checks.

Applicable Conditions

  • Position Advantage: The button position acts last postflop, making it easier to observe opponents' actions and control the pot.
  • Wet Board: The board texture is complex, making it difficult for opponents to have strong made hands, and it is likely to change on the turn. The floater can exploit opponents' tendency to fold due to fear of draws.
  • Opponent Characteristics: Typically targets opponents with a wide c-betting range on the flop but who are prone to check-fold on the turn.

Typical Execution

  1. Preflop: Button limps or calls a raise, keeping the pot small and range concealed.
  2. Flop: Opponent bets, the pot is now of a certain size. Decide to call based on the wetness of the board and the opponent's bet size.
  3. Turn: If opponent checks, bet to apply pressure, representing a strong hand or a made draw; if opponent continues betting, usually fold.

Risks and Notes

  • Limping preflop may expose a weak range, making it vulnerable to attacks from opponents in position.
  • On wet boards, opponents may have draws or made hands, increasing the risk of a failed float.
  • Should be used sparingly, otherwise opponents will adjust.
