Poker Term

庄位河牌超池下注彩虹面(BTN River Overbet Rainbow)

Refers to a situation on the river where the button player makes an overbet a bet larger than the pot size on a rainbow board (three or four community cards all of different suits).

Term Analysis

BTN (Button) is the most advantageous position in Texas Hold'em, as the player on the button acts last post-flop. River is the final community card, with the board fully determined. Overbet refers to a bet larger than the current pot. Rainbow means the community cards have at least three different suits, eliminating the possibility of a flush draw.

Strategic Implications

When the BTN makes an overbet on the river, it typically represents a very polarized range: either a very strong made hand (e.g., the nuts) or a pure bluff. The rainbow board eliminates flush possibilities, so opponents are more likely to hold pairs or hands that form a straight with one card. The purpose of an overbet is:

  • Value betting: extracting maximum value from opponents' strong made hands (e.g., top pair);
  • Bluffing: forcing opponents to fold medium-strength hands (e.g., bottom pair or top pair with weak kicker) because they fear the BTN holds an extremely strong hand.

Due to the BTN's positional advantage post-flop and the rainbow board rendering flush draws irrelevant, the BTN's overbet is more credible. However, if the BTN overbets frequently, opponents may adjust by calling with bluff-catchers (e.g., medium pairs).

Typical Scenario

Example: Preflop BTN raises, Big Blind calls. Flop K♠8♥2♦ (rainbow, K-high). BTN continuation bets 2/3 pot, BB calls. Turn 5♣, BTN checks, BB checks. River 7♥, pot 100BB. BTN bets 120BB (overbet). BTN could hold AK (strong value) or a complete miss like A♣Q♣ (bluff).

Notes

Overbetting requires precise reading of the opponent's range. If the opponent is a calling station, bluffing frequency should be reduced. Overbetting is less effective in multi-way pots because opponents' calling ranges become tighter. In GTO strategy, overbetting should be kept at an appropriate frequency to avoid being exploited.
