This strategy emphasizes extreme tightness and risk aversion, as any elimination before the bubble can cost the seat.

Key Principles

Play Tight, Especially Early

In a satellite, chips have diminishing marginal utility: the difference between having 1 chip and 10,000 chips is significant for survival, but having 50,000 chips vs 40,000 is often irrelevant once the seat is secured. Therefore, players should avoid marginal situations. A typical guideline is to only play premium hands (TT+, AK, AQ) in early and mid-bubble phases.

Fold Equity Is Low

Because opponents are also playing tight, bluffing becomes less effective. Most players will only call with strong hands, so attempting steals with weak holdings is risky. The cost of being caught and eliminated far outweighs the benefit of adding small blinds.

Big Stacks Can Apply Pressure

Players with large stacks can raise frequently to collect blinds, but they must still avoid confrontations with other big stacks. A common tactic is to raise from late position to steal from small stacks, who are desperate to survive.

ICM Considerations

ICM (Independent Chip Model) is crucial in satellite bubbles. The value of chips is nonlinear: a stack of 1,000 chips may have a 50% chance of winning a seat, while a stack of 2,000 chips might have a 60% chance. Thus, risking chips for marginal gains is often -EV. Players should calculate the minimum equity needed to call a shove, which is typically much higher than in normal tournaments.

Example Scenario

Suppose there are 10 players left, and 9 win a seat. The average stack is 10,000 chips, the blinds are 500/1,000. You have 12,000 chips in the small blind. The button, with 15,000 chips, shoves. You look down at AQo. Do you call?

In a normal tournament, this is an easy call. But in a satellite bubble, folding is often correct because calling and losing eliminates you (no seat), while folding leaves you with 11,500 chips, still likely to survive. Only call with premium hands like KK or AA, where you are a significant favorite.

Common Mistakes

• Playing too many hands out of boredom.
• Trying to accumulate chips to become chip leader, ignoring that survival is the goal.
• Calling all-in bets with hands that are profitable in cash games but too risky on the bubble.
• Not adjusting to opponent tendencies: some players are too tight, allowing steals; others are loose and should be avoided.
