C-Bet from UTG+1

C-Bet from UTG+1

Term: UTG+1 C-Bet C-Bet from UTG+1 A player who raised from the UTG+1 position preflop, and then continues to bet on the flop.

Overview

UTG+1 (Under the Gun +1) is located to the right of the UTG position and is one of the earliest positions to act preflop. Making a continuation bet from this position means the preflop raiser uses their postflop positional advantage to continue showing strength. Since the position is early, the UTG+1 preflop raising range is typically tight, so a continuation bet on the flop often represents a strong range, but it can also be exploited by opponents.

Strategic Considerations

  • Range Characteristics: The UTG+1 preflop raising range generally includes high pairs, high cards, and some suited connectors. When making a continuation bet on the flop, the frequency and sizing should depend on the board structure.
  • Board Texture: On dry boards (e.g., A-7-2 rainbow), high-frequency continuation betting is appropriate because opponents are less likely to have connected. On wet boards (e.g., 9-8-7 with two suits), caution is needed to avoid being re-raised by draws.
  • Adjustments Against Opponents: Skilled players will notice the continuation bet frequency from UTG+1 and may exploit it with raises or calls. Therefore, it is necessary to mix in checks at appropriate times, especially when the flop does not match your range.

Example

Typical scenario: A UTG+1 player holds AK, raises preflop, and the flop comes K-9-4 rainbow. On this board, a continuation bet is highly valuable, as it gains value and protects your hand. If the flop were Q-J-10 with two suits, the continuation bet would require more caution, as opponents have more drawing hands.
