CO 20bb Defense
Term: CO 20bb Defense Refers to the defensive strategy and range used by a player in the CO position when facing a raise from a later position e.g., BTN, SB, BB with an effective stack of approximately 20 big blinds.
Overview
CO 20bb Defense is part of short-stack strategy in tournaments or cash games. When a player in the CO position holds about 20 big blinds and faces a raise from a later position (especially a steal blind from the BTN), they need to formulate a reasonable defense range to avoid being overly exploited.
Strategy Points
- Range Adjustment: At 20bb depth, the defense range is usually tighter than when deep-stacked, because the stack is relatively shallow and postflop maneuverability is limited. Players may tend to 3-bet shove with strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and call with medium hands (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors), depending on opponent tendencies.
- Shove vs. Call: Due to ICM (tournament) or pot odds factors, shoving can apply pressure and simplify decisions, while calling may lead to difficult postflop folds. Generally, against a BTN raise, value hands are shoved and some speculative hands are called.
- Position Disadvantage: The CO position is at a postflop disadvantage relative to the BTN, so defense must be more cautious. If the blinds are active, the range may need to be tightened.
- Opponent Adjustment: Against aggressive stealers, the 3-bet shove range can be moderately widened; against tight players, more calling or folding is appropriate.
Typical Examples (Not Absolute)
- Value 3-bet Shove: JJ+, AK
- Call: Small pairs (66-88), suited connectors (67s+)
- Fold: Trash hands like KTo, QJo
Note: The actual range should be dynamically adjusted based on table dynamics, opponent ranges, ICM pressure, and other factors.
