CO Donk Bet
CO Donk Bet
Term: CO Donk Bet Refers to a CO cutoff player who called a pre-flop raise and then leads out betting on the flop, rather than waiting for the pre-flop raiser to act.
Overview
CO Donk Bet refers to a player in the CO (Cutoff position) who leads out on the flop, despite not having raised preflop (usually by calling a raise from an earlier position or checking from the blinds). Unlike the common blind-position donk bet, the CO is a relatively advantageous position, making CO donk bet rare in practice and typically used for specific strategies or targeted reads on an opponent's range.
Application Scenarios
A typical scenario: Preflop, the CO player calls a raise from middle or early position, then on the flop the CO chooses to lead out instead of letting the original raiser continue applying pressure. This play may be based on the following considerations:
- Board texture and range advantage: The player believes the flop favors their range more, so they bet to seize the initiative.
- Folding out opponent bluffs: By betting with a medium-strength made hand, they prevent the original raiser from firing a continuation bluff.
- Leveraging image: If the CO player has a tight calling range preflop, a donk bet may represent a strong hand, forcing the opponent to overfold.
Strategy Considerations
From a GTO (Game Theory Optimal) perspective, a CO donk bet is typically not an equilibrium strategy because the preflop raiser has a stronger range, and the CO already enjoys positional advantage, making it unnecessary to sacrifice that positional value. However, it can be effective as an exploitative adjustment against opponents who c-bet (continuation bet) too frequently. Note that this play is vulnerable to exploitation by experienced opponents, who may raise to punish the donk bet, forcing the CO to fold weak made hands or draws.
Notes
- CO Donk Bet is not a universally recognized standard term; different poker tutorials may define it variably, but the core concept remains the same: the CO position leads out on the flop contrary to the usual action.
- Use it cautiously in practice to avoid becoming a predictable pattern.
