CO Preflop 4-Bet Pot

CO Preflop 4-Bet Pot

CO Preflop 4-Bet Pot Refers to the pot situation created after a 4-bet is made from the cutoff CO position preflop.

Meaning & Background

CO (Cut Off, the first seat to the right of the button) is a position with a high preflop raising frequency due to its positional advantage postflop. When the CO player opens and then faces a 3-bet, if the CO re-raises (a 4-bet), the resulting pot is a CO preflop 4-bet pot. This scenario commonly occurs in deep stack situations or when both players have strong hands.

Strategy Points

  • Range Characteristics: The CO's 4-bet range typically includes value hands (e.g., AA, KK, AK) and some bluffs (e.g., A5s, KQo), depending on the opponent's 3-bet frequency.
  • Positional Advantage: As the last preflop actor, the CO retains control postflop after 4-betting, but must consider potential continuation bets or fold decisions postflop.
  • Pot Size: A 4-bet pot is usually large with a low SPR (Stack-to-Pot Ratio), so postflop decisions lean toward all-in or fold, discouraging slow play.
  • Opponent Reactions: Facing a 4-bet, opponents may call, 5-bet, or fold. Adjust 4-bet frequency and sizing based on opponent tendencies.

Typical Example Scenario

The CO player holds KK, opens to 3BB, the BTN (button) 3-bets to 9BB, the CO 4-bets to 22BB, the BTN calls, forming a CO preflop 4-bet pot. The flop comes A-7-2, the CO bets, the BTN raises, and the CO folds. In this example, the CO gives up due to an unfavorable flop.

Notes

  • 4-bet sizing is typically 2.5-3 times the original raise; too large may expose hand strength, too small gives opponents favorable odds.
  • In Texas Hold'em, the dynamics of a CO preflop 4-bet pot should consider ICM (tournament) or GTO (cash game) theory to avoid being exploited.
