CO River Bet-Fold Dry

A strategy of betting from the cutoff CO on the river when facing a dry board, and folding if the opponent raises.

Overview

CO River Bet-Fold Dry is an advanced poker strategy specific to the Cut Off (CO) position on the river when facing a dry board. It involves a "bet-fold" line, typically used for value or thin value betting while defending against opponent bluff raises.

Strategy Rationale

  • Position Advantage: The CO position, being just before the button, enjoys relatively late action and gains more information. On a dry board, opponent ranges are easier to read.
  • Board Texture: A dry board is one unlikely to produce straights or flushes, e.g., a rainbow board with no connected cards. Here, opponent made-hand ranges are limited, and bluffing probability is lower.
  • Action Purpose: The bet aims to extract value from weaker made hands (e.g., top pair weak kicker) or missed draws. If raised, it typically indicates a strong hand (e.g., sets, two pair) from the opponent, so folding avoids loss.

Applicable Conditions

  • Opponent Type: Most effective against tight-passive or passive players, who rarely raise with weak hands.
  • Own Hand Strength: Suitable for medium-strength made hands (e.g., top pair medium kicker, two pair but with potential board danger).
  • Board Dynamics: The river does not change the board structure, and the bet size is large enough to polarize the opponent's raising range.

Notes

  • Balance Range: Avoid overusing this strategy to prevent exploitation (e.g., opponents knowing you will fold and frequently bluff-raising).
  • Consider Stack Depth: Stack depth affects folding decisions; with deep stacks, calling a raise might be considered.
  • Observe Bet Sizing: If the bet is too small, opponents may raise with a wider range, reducing the profitability of folding.

Typical Example

Suppose the flop is K♠ 7♦ 2♣, turn 4♠, river 3♥. The player in CO holds K♦ 9♠. They bet about 2/3 pot, and the opponent raises 3x. Since the river is dry, the opponent's raising range is mainly KQ+ or sets, so the player chooses to fold.
