Overview
"Complete the Bet" is a poker term commonly used in the preflop stage. In limit or pot-limit games, when the [big blind] has not raised, a player merely calls the amount of the big blind to enter the flop — this action is called "completing the bet." It differs from raising or folding and is a passive way to enter the pot.
Usage Scenarios
- Preflop: At a given [blind level], after early-position players fold or call, a later-position player chooses to call the big blind directly instead of raising, thus completing the bet.
- Difference from [Call]: Generally, "call" can refer to paying any bet size; "complete the bet" specifically refers to calling the big blind preflop, and the amount is exactly equal to the big blind.
Strategic Implications
Completing the bet usually indicates that the player's hand strength is moderate or weak—they are unwilling to raise and build the pot but still want to see the flop at a low cost. Overusing this action may allow aggressive opponents to frequently raise and apply pressure. In cash games, completing the bet is common in multi-way pots or when holding [speculative hands] in late position.
Typical Example
- Example: Blinds $1/$2. Preflop, the [UTG] folds. The button player holds suited connectors and chooses to complete the bet (calls $2). The big blind does not raise, and three players see the flop.
Notes
Completing the bet does not apply when a raise has already occurred. If a previous player has raised, a subsequent player's call is simply called a "call," not a "complete the bet."
