Counterfeit Low

低牌伪造

**Term: Counterfeit Low** In high-low split poker games, a situation where the appearance of a pair or a lower card on the board causes a player's originally possible low hand combination to become invalid.

Counterfeit Low

Term Background

Counterfeit Low is an important concept in high-low split games like Omaha Hi-Lo. In these games, a low hand must consist of five unpaired cards of different suits, all with ranks of 8 or lower. If a player's hole cards combined with the community cards initially form a qualifying low hand, but subsequent community cards cause the low hand to no longer meet the conditions (e.g., the board pairs), it is called a "counterfeit low."

Mechanism Explanation

For example, a player holds hole cards A-2 and the community cards are 3-4-5, giving the player a low hand of A-2-3-4-5. However, if another 5 appears on the turn or river (or any card that pairs one of the low cards), the pair of 5s disqualifies the low hand, and the low is "counterfeited." A more common counterfeit occurs when a community card is lower than the player's existing low cards—e.g., the player uses A-2 with 3-4-5 to form a low, but the river brings an A. In this case, the player may still have a low (e.g., A-2-3-4-5), but if the A pairs the hole A, a new combination is needed; if the board already has an A, then the player's hole A is "counterfeited" into a pair.

Strategy Implications

When selecting starting hands, players should avoid those that are easily counterfeited. For example, holding A-2 is ideal, but if the board already contains an A or 2, the low hand's strength decreases. In practice, players need to evaluate the board structure to assess the "counterfeitability" of their low hand and decide whether to continue.

Typical Example

Suppose a player holds A♥2♠ and the community cards are 3♦4♣5♠. The player has the nut low hand of A-2-3-4-5. If the turn is 5♥, the board pairs the 5, making the player's low hand invalid due to the pair. The low is counterfeited.
