Double or Nothing In the Money

Double or Nothing In the Money

Term: Double or Nothing In the Money DN A single-table tournament with a prize structure where all players who make the money receive double their buy-in, and the rest receive nothing.

Overview

A Double or Nothing Tournament (DN) is a special structure of a single-table tournament (SNG), typically with 9 or 10 players. Its prize distribution is extremely simple: only about half of the players (e.g., 5) make the money, each receiving twice the buy-in amount (slightly less than twice after rake), while those who don't make the money get nothing. Therefore, the player's goal is to survive into the money to succeed, rather than competing for high rankings.

How It Works

  • These tournaments usually use the standard blind structure of an SNG, but with a different payout distribution. For example, a 9-player DN with a buy-in of $10+$1 has a prize pool of $90, and the top 5 players each receive $18 (i.e., 1.8 times the buy-in, after rake).
  • Since prizes do not increase with rank, players have no incentive to accumulate chips after making the money. A "conservative" strategy often emerges: once near the money, players tend to be extremely cautious, waiting for others to be eliminated.

Strategic Differences

Compared to regular SNGs, the core strategy of a DN is survival rather than chip accumulation. Therefore:

  • In the early stages, you can adopt a loose-aggressive strategy to build chips, giving you more advantage during the bubble phase.
  • During the bubble (when only 1-2 players remain to be eliminated before the money), be extremely cautious and avoid risks, as elimination means zero payout.
  • Once in the money, since the prize is locked, players may frequently go all-in or fold, but theoretically, you should continue to accumulate chips for the next win. In practice, however, it is common to see all players simply show down their hands.

Common Misconceptions

Some players believe that the bubble strategy in a DN is the same as in a regular SNG, but the actual difference is significant: in a regular SNG, after making the money, there are still tiered payouts for higher finishes, whereas in a DN, there is no difference within the money. Thus, the value of surviving the bubble far outweighs the value of accumulating chips.
