HJ Multiway Pot Preflop Strategy

HJ Multiway Pot Preflop Strategy

HJ Multiway Pot Preflop Strategy Refers to the adjustment of starting hand selection and action strategy for a player in the HJ position when multiple players typically three or more enter the pot preflop, in order to cope with higher confrontation costs and lower win rates.

Overview

HJ (Hijack) is the position before CO (Cutoff) and after MP (Middle Position) in a 6-max game. In preflop multiway pots (i.e., at least three players not folded), HJ players face more complex confrontations: pot odds improve, but the increase in opponents leads to a decrease in win rate, and positional advantage is still inferior to CO and BTN (Button).

Strategy Adjustments

Tighten Starting Hand Range

  • In heads-up or three-way pots, HJ can raise a wider range (e.g., about 20%-25% of hands). But in pots with four or more players, it should be significantly tightened, usually only playing high pairs, big high cards (AQ+), and suited connectors (such as T9s, JTs) and other playable hands.
  • Avoid playing hands in multiway pots that are susceptible to reverse implied odds, such as AJo, KQo and other offsuit broadways, because they are easily dominated when hitting top pair.

Raise Sizing and Intent

  • In multiway pots, HJ's raise should be larger, e.g., 3BB + 1BB per limper, to isolate weak players and control the number of entrants.
  • If players behind are aggressive (e.g., CO or BTN frequently 3-bet), consider folding marginal hands to avoid being forced to play a large pot out of position.

Limping and Squeezing

  • When someone limps, HJ limping is usually not a good option, because multiple players behind may raise, leading to being forced to fold or getting stuck in a multiway pot. More often, it's better to raise directly or fold.
  • If there are multiple limpers ahead and HJ holds a strong hand, consider a larger raise (squeeze) to take the pot directly or establish initiative.

Example

6-max, blinds 50/100, HJ holds 88. UTG limps, MP limps. HJ should raise to 400-500 instead of limping, to avoid being forced to fold if CO or BTN raises behind. If HJ holds AA/KK, similarly raise large to build the pot and isolate.

Summary

The core principle for HJ in multiway pot preflop is: use a tighter, higher-quality range, combined with larger raise sizing, to try to create heads-up or few-player pots, in order to leverage the remaining positional advantage.
