HJ Open Raise

HJ Open Raise

Term: HJ位率先加注 HJ Open Raise In a six-handed or nine-handed table, the player in the Hijack position the second seat to the right of the dealer makes the first voluntary raise when no one has entered the pot.

Position Explanation

HJ (Hijack) is a key middle-late position in 6-max or 9-max tables, typically after LJ (Lojack, UTG+1) and before CO (Cutoff). In 6-max, HJ corresponds to the first position after UTG; in 9-max, HJ is UTG+2.

Concept and Function

Open Raise refers to the first player to voluntarily bet in the round, with no previous chips in the pot. HJ's open raise range is wider than early positions (UTG, UTG+1) due to positional advantage: only CO, BTN (Button), and blinds remain, making it easier to gain information or control the pot via position (acting late or early postflop). However, HJ also faces the risk of being re-raised (3-bet) by CO or BTN, so its opening range must balance strong hands with steal hands.

Typical Range (Example)

Generally, HJ's open raise range includes: high pairs (QQ+), high big cards (AK, AQ), medium pairs (TT, JJ), and some suited connectors (e.g., T9s, 87s) and suited aces (A2s-A5s). Specific range varies with opponent style and stack depth.

Strategic Significance

HJ Open Raise is an important tool for establishing pot control and applying pressure. By raising, the player can isolate the blinds, reduce opponents, and use positional advantage for bluffs or value bets postflop. Proper opening frequency helps balance one's range and avoid exploitation by experienced opponents.
