Poker Term

劫位河牌成对冷跟注(HJ River Cold Call Paired)

In Texas Hold'em, refers to a player in the Hijack position cold calling an opponent's bet or raise on the river when the board is paired.

Term Explanation

HJ (Hijack) is the position directly after the UTG (Under the Gun) in six-handed or nine-handed tables, typically offering a moderate positional advantage. The river is the final community card, at which point the board is fully determined. A cold call refers to calling a raise without having previously invested any chips in the hand, meaning the player has not yet acted prior to the call. "Paired" means the river card creates at least one pair on the board—for example, a board of K♠K♣9♦5♥2♠.

Usage Scenarios

This term is typically used to analyze a specific postflop scenario: assume the HJ player has taken no action on earlier streets (e.g., checked after a preflop raise), then on the river an opponent bets and the HJ player calls directly, while the board is paired. This action may indicate that the HJ holds a made hand (such as a medium pocket pair) or is attempting to bluff-catch, but must be wary of the opponent possibly holding a full house or quads.

Strategic Considerations

A paired board alters hand strength evaluation: a previously strong top pair may be weakened by the paired card, while also increasing the possibility of a full house. When making a cold call, the HJ player should assess whether the opponent's range contains many paired hands (e.g., one pair, trips, etc.). Generally, on a paired board, a defensive call is preferred over an aggressive raise.

Typical Hand Example

Assume the HJ raises preflop, and the blind calls. Flop: K♠K♣9♦; both check. Turn: 5♥; both check. River: 2♠; the blind bets, and the HJ calls. In this case, the HJ's action is precisely "HJ river cold call (paired)."

Notes

This term is not common in literature and is mostly used in hand analysis. Cold calls on the river are rare because river bets are typically large, and players have usually already taken action on earlier streets. The "cold" in the term emphasizes that the player had not voluntarily invested any chips prior to the call.
