Overview
Hourly Rate is a core metric for poker players to evaluate their profitability efficiency, typically expressed as the amount of chips or cash won per hour. It comprehensively reflects a player's skill level, game selection, table dynamics, and time management ability.
Calculation Method
The formula for hourly rate is:
Hourly Rate = Total Profit ÷ Total Hours Played
Total profit must deduct all costs, such as buy-in fees, rake, tips, etc. For online players, the impact of multi-tabling must also be considered, as the number of tables played simultaneously significantly changes the number of hands per hour.
Influencing Factors
- Game Type: The hourly rate in cash games is usually more stable than in tournaments, while tournament hourly rates are more volatile, but top players can achieve extremely high hourly rates in large events.
- Stakes and Opponents: In lower stakes games, the skill edge is more pronounced, and the hourly rate may be higher; however, high-stakes games offer greater potential profit but are more competitive, and the hourly rate may not necessarily be higher.
- Multi-tabling Ability: Online players can greatly increase hands per hour by playing multiple tables simultaneously, thereby increasing their hourly rate. However, excessive multi-tabling may lead to a decline in decision quality, which can actually reduce the hourly rate.
- Game Selection: Choosing profitable tables (e.g., those with many weak players) is key to improving hourly rate.
Hourly Rate and Variance
Hourly rate is a long-term average; short-term results can deviate significantly due to luck (variance). Therefore, evaluating hourly rate requires a sufficiently large sample size (typically at least 100,000 hands or hundreds of hours of play).
Typical Ranges
- Recreational Players: Hourly rate may be negative (long-term losing) or slightly above break-even.
- Professional Players: In low-stakes games, the hourly rate is typically 1-5 big blinds per hour; in high-stakes games, the hourly rate may be higher, but variance is also greater.
Notes
Hourly rate does not include non-playing time (e.g., studying, learning, traveling), so professional players' actual income must account for these hidden costs. Additionally, differences in purchasing power across currencies can affect the real value of the hourly rate.
