Win rate is the most common metric used to evaluate a poker player's long-term profitability. It represents the average amount won (or lost) over a specific sample size, typically normalized per 100 hands (bb/100) or per hour. A positive win rate indicates profit, while a negative one indicates loss. Win rate is influenced by skill, game type, stakes, and table conditions.

Calculation

Win rate is calculated as total profit divided by the number of hands played, then scaled to 100 hands. For example, if a player wins $500 over 10,000 hands in a $1/$2 game (where big blind is $2), their win rate in bb/100 is: (500 / (10,000/100)) / 2 = (500 / 100) / 2 = 5 / 2 = 2.5 bb/100. Alternatively, hourly win rate is total profit divided by total hours played.

Typical Values

A winning player in online low-stakes cash games might achieve a win rate of 5–10 bb/100. At higher stakes, win rates tend to decrease due to tougher competition. In tournaments, win rate is often measured as ROI (return on investment). For example, a sustained ROI of 15–30% is considered excellent in small-field tournaments, while large-field multi-table tournaments may yield lower ROIs. In live games, win rates are often expressed in big blinds per hour, with 10–20 bb/hour being a common benchmark for solid winners.

Factors Affecting Win Rate
