Term: Button Continuation Betting Range On the flop, the button player, as the preflop raiser, selects a set of starting hand combinations to continuation bet in order to maintain aggression.
Concept
Button Continuation Bet Range refers to the set of hands with which the button player chooses to bet on the flop after raising preflop. The button is the best position in Texas Hold'em, acting last postflop with a clear informational advantage, so the continuation bet range is typically wide.
Range Composition
- Value Hands: Including top pair or better, strong draws (such as open-ended straight draws, flush draws), etc., aimed at extracting value.
- Bluff Hands: Including weak made hands (such as bottom pair, gutshot straight draws), backdoor draws, or complete air, using positional pressure to force opponents to fold.
- Mixed Range: A typical button continuation bet range includes about 60%-80% of the preflop raising range, depending on board texture, opponent tendencies, and stack depth.
Influencing Factors
- Board Texture: On wet boards (e.g., flush or straight draws), the betting range is more value-heavy; on dry boards (e.g., rainbow unconnected), the betting range can be wider with bluffs.
- Opponent Tendencies: Against opponents who fold frequently, the continuation bet range can be expanded; against opponents who call or raise frequently, it should be tightened.
- Stack Depth: In deep stacks, the continuation bet range can be more flexible, leveraging implied odds; in short stacks, the range tends to be more value-oriented.
Example
A typical button preflop raising range is about 30% of starting hands (e.g., pairs, Ax, suited connectors, etc.). On a rainbow unconnected low flop (e.g., 8♠5♦2♣), the continuation bet range might include: top pair or better, all eights, fives, twos, and high cards with backdoor draws (e.g., A9s), comprising about 70% of the raising range.
