Button Continuation Bet Range

Button Continuation Bet Range

Term: Button Continuation Bet Range Refers to the range of starting hand combinations used by the button player when continuing to bet on the flop after raising preflop.

Overview

The Button Continuation Bet range is an important strategic concept in Texas Hold'em. It describes the set of hands a player on the button (dealer position) uses to make a continuation bet (C-bet) on the flop after raising preflop. This range is typically wide because the button has positional advantage, allowing flexible adjustments based on the board texture and opponent reactions postflop.

Components

  • Value Hands: Strong made hands after the flop (such as top pair or better, draws, etc.) that are likely ahead and aim to build the pot.
  • Semi-Bluff Hands: Drawing hands (e.g., straight draws, flush draws) or backdoor draws that may currently be behind but can apply pressure and have potential to improve later.
  • Air: Hands that completely miss the flop but use position and preflop image to bluff, forcing opponents to fold.

Influencing Factors

  • Board Texture: On dry boards (e.g., rainbow with no connected cards), the continuation bet range is wider; on wet boards (e.g., possible flush or straight draws), it tends to use higher-quality hands.
  • Opponent Type: Against tight-passive players, the continuation bet range can be expanded; against calling stations or aggressive opponents, it should be tightened.
  • Stack Depth: With deep stacks, the proportion of semi-bluffs can increase; with short stacks, rely more on value hands.

Strategy Example (Typical Situation)

Assume the button raises with roughly 30% of starting hands and the flop comes Q♠ 8♥ 2♦. The continuation bet range might include:

  • All top pair or better hands (e.g., AQ, KQ, QJ, etc.)
  • Combination draws (e.g., JTs with backdoor flush)
  • Some overpairs (e.g., KK, AA)
  • Middle and low pairs (e.g., 99, 77) sometimes as protection bets
  • Some complete air (e.g., A5s, K7s) for balance

Relationship with GTO

Optimal play requires the button's continuation bet range to remain balanced across different flops to avoid being exploited by opponents. A typical frequency is around 50%-70%, adjusted based on board dynamics.

Notes

  • The continuation bet range is not fixed; it should be adjusted based on postflop opponent reactions and future streets.
  • Overly frequent continuation betting can make the range too transparent, making it easier for experienced opponents to counter.
