UTG Open Range refers to the set of hands a player is willing to open-raise with from the Under the Gun position, the first to act preflop in a full-ring or six-max game.
Understanding UTG Open Range
The Under the Gun (UTG) position is the first seat to act preflop, located immediately to the left of the big blind. In a full-ring 9-handed game, UTG is the earliest position; in 6-max, it is also the first to act. Because UTG must act without any information about the actions of later players, the opening range from this position is typically the tightest of all positions.
Why a Tight Range?
Opening too wide from UTG exposes a player to multiple threats: players behind can 3-bet or call with positional advantage, and the range must survive against up to eight opponents (in full-ring) who all act after. A UTG open range usually consists of premium hands that perform well in multiway pots or can withstand aggression. Common inclusions are high pocket pairs (TT+), strong broadways (AK, AQ, AJs), and suited aces (ATs, KQs). Weaker hands like small pairs or suited connectors are generally avoided because they are difficult to play out of position against a field with deep stacks.

While exact ranges vary by player and game dynamic, a typical UTG open range in a standard full-ring game might be:
- Pocket pairs: 88+ (some players include 77 or 66)
- Ace-high hands: AK, AQ, AJs, ATs (sometimes AJo is folded)
- King-high hands: KQs, KJs (KQo is often folded)
- Queen-high hands: QJs (sometimes QTs)
In 6-max games, the range is slightly wider due to fewer opponents, often including all pairs 66+, all suited aces, and more suited connectors like T9s.
Modern GTO Considerations
Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategies often call for a somewhat wider UTG open range than traditional tight advice, especially in deep-stack cash games. However, the range remains the narrowest among all positions. In tournament play, factors like ICM and stack sizes further adjust the range. It is crucial to adapt to table tendencies: if players behind are overly aggressive, tighten the range; if they are passive, you can open slightly wider.
