Overview

Light Float Defense is a defensive strategy in Texas Hold'em used against a continuation bet. A player calls on the flop with a hand that has almost no direct showdown value but some drawing or bluffing potential, making it a form of light float.

Application Scenarios

• Opponent's range is tight: When you judge that the opponent's continuation betting range consists mainly of strong hands, light floating carries higher risk; it is more suitable when the opponent's c-bet range is wide and they fold frequently.
• Backdoor draws available: For example, holding two overcards combined with a straight or flush draw—though not yet a made hand, there is potential to improve on the turn.
• Position advantage: Usually performed in position, allowing you to decide whether to bluff on the turn based on the opponent's actions.

Strategic Considerations

• The key to success is aggression on later streets: if the opponent checks on the turn, a bet often represents a strong hand and forces the opponent to fold.
• The range must be balanced to avoid overuse, which could lead to exploitation by the opponent.
• Typical example: Flop 8♠ 6♦ 2♣, player holds 9♦ 7♦ (an open-ended straight draw), calls opponent's c-bet, planning to hit or bluff on the turn.

Risks

• If the opponent continues betting on the turn after a flop c-bet, the player may lose more chips if they fail to improve.
• Frequent light floating can be punished by opponents with value hands or re-raises.
