MP 40bb Resteal
Overview
MP 40bb Resteal is a common restealing strategy in poker tournaments or deep-stacked cash games. It specifically refers to a player in middle position (MP, i.e., UTG+1 in 6-max or HJ in 9-max) with an effective stack of approximately 40 big blinds (bb) making a 3-bet against a later position player (e.g., CO, BTN) who frequently steals blinds. The term highlights the critical parameter of stack depth, as 40bb is the typical "sweet spot" for restealing: too few chips and you lack fold equity, too many and the risk-reward ratio becomes unfavorable.
Tactical Principle
The core of Resteal is exploiting the wide range of opponents’ steal attempts. When a late-position player raises with a wide range after everyone folds (stealing blinds), an MP player holding medium-strong hands (e.g., AJ, KQ, 77–99) may find that calling invites multiple players and makes postflop play difficult. 3-betting to resteal forces weaker hands to fold and avoids complex postflop situations. With 40bb stacks, after a 3-bet, if the opponent 4-bets all-in, you still have decent odds to call or fold, and your own 3-bet carries threat (the opponent must consider the risk of being pushed back).
Execution Points
- Opponent Tendencies: Use only against players who steal frequently from late position. Against tight-passive opponents, resteal effectiveness drops.
- Range Selection: Typically use medium-strong hands like medium pairs (77–99), suited connectors (JTs, QJs), or strong aces (AT+). Avoid weak hands for restealing, as the opponent may hold a strong hand.
- Bet Sizing: 3-bet to about 2.5–3 times the opponent’s raise. For example, if the opponent raises to 2.5bb, resteal to 7–8bb.
- Postflop Plan: If called, decide to continue betting or give up based on the board texture. Avoid overcommitting.
Considerations
- Stack depth need not be exactly 40bb; 30–50bb works, but 40bb is the optimal balance.
- If the opponent has a tendency to 4-bet, be prepared to fold or shove. With 40bb, shoving against a 4-bet requires caution—only do so against very loose opponents.
- Avoid restealing against tight middle-position players, as their stealing range may be narrower.
