MP 50bb Defense

MP 50bb Defense

Middle Position 50BB Defense Range MP 50bb Defense When effective stack is 50 big blinds, the range of calls or re-raises used by a middle position player facing an early position raise, typically used to balance value and bluffs.

Position and Stack Depth

MP (Middle Position) is the third action position in a six-handed or nine-handed table, typically between early and late positions. At a stack depth of 50BB, it is considered medium stacks, and decisions must consider post-flop pot odds and range construction.

Significance of Defense Range

At 50BB depth, when MP faces an early position raise (e.g., UTG opens to 2.5BB), the defense range mainly consists of calls and 3-bets (re-raises). The objectives are:

  • Protect the blinds from continuous aggression
  • Utilize position and hand quality against the opponent’s strong range
  • Control the pot and reduce post-flop risk

Typical Composition

Calling Range (approximately 8%-12% of hands)

  • Medium pairs (66 to TT)
  • Suited connectors (56s to JTs)
  • Big broadway hands like AQo, AJs, KQo
  • Some structured hands such as A4s, KJs (for post-flop stealing)

3-bet Range (approximately 4%-6%)

  • Value: QQ+, AK (typically 3-bet to 7-9BB)
  • Bluff: Some small suited connectors (e.g., 87s), A2-A5s, and a few medium hands (e.g., KQo) for balance

Strategy Adjustments

  • If the opponent raises frequently, expand the 3-bet bluff range
  • If the opponent is tight-passive, lean toward calling and apply pressure post-flop with position
  • At 50BB depth, after a 3-bet you will have about 40BB remaining; be cautious with post-flop shoves or continuation bets

Example

Facing a UTG open to 2.5BB, MP calls with TT, 3-bets to 8BB with KK, and 3-bet bluffs with A4s.

Note: This is a simplified example. Actual ranges should be adjusted based on opponent tendencies, tournament stage, and dynamics.
