A continuation bet made by the preflop raiser from middle position (typically seats 4-6 at a 9-handed table) on the flop.
Overview
MP C-Bet refers to a continuation bet (c-bet) executed by a player who raised preflop from middle position (MP). In a 9-handed game, MP usually covers seats 4, 5, and 6 (the three seats directly to the right of the cutoff). The term combines the positional context (MP) with the postflop action (c-bet).
Usage and Strategy
A c-bet is a bet made on the flop by the player who was the last aggressor preflop. When that player is in MP, the c-bet's effectiveness depends on several factors:
- Number of opponents: MP typically faces one or more callers from later positions (CO, BTN, blinds). More opponents reduce c-bet success rate.
- Flop texture: Dry flops (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow) favor c-bets; wet flops (e.g., 9-8-6 two-tone) may require checking more often.
- Range advantage: MP's preflop raising range is stronger than later positions' calling ranges, but weaker than early positions'. A c-bet exploits this when the flop favors the raiser.
Typical sizes are 1/3 to 2/3 pot, adjusted for board texture and opponent tendencies. Against tight opponents, a small c-bet (33% pot) can often take down the pot; against calling stations, a larger bet or check might be better.
Example (typical scenario)
9-handed game, blinds 1/2. Hero opens to 6 from MP (seat 5) with A♠K♣. Only the big blind calls. Flop: K♦7♣2♠. Hero c-bets 4.5 (75% pot) as a standard value bet. This is an MP C-Bet.
Conversely, if flop comes J♥9♦8♦, Hero might check behind to control pot or induce bluffs, avoiding a c-bet due to wet board and opponent's perceived range.
Considerations
- Opponent tendencies: Against aggressive players, check-raising ranges may exploit frequent MP c-bets; against passive players, c-betting more often is profitable.
- Multiway pots: In 3+ way pots, MP c-bets become less profitable as someone often connects. Checking is often preferred.
- Balance: Regulated c-betting frequencies (around 60-70% on dry boards, lower on wet boards) prevent exploitation.
