In poker, exploitability measures the maximum expected value (EV) a strategy loses against an optimal counter-strategy, indicating how vulnerable it is to exploitation.
Exploitability is a key concept in game theory and poker strategy, quantifying how much a given strategy can be exploited by an opponent who adjusts their play to maximize their own EV. The lower the exploitability, the more balanced and robust the strategy is against any counter-strategy.
Understanding Exploitability
In heads-up play, a strategy's exploitability is defined as the difference between the EV of the strategy and the EV of the best response to it, typically expressed as big blinds per 100 hands (bb/100). A strategy with zero exploitability is a Nash equilibrium—no opponent can unilaterally improve their EV by deviating. In practice, humans and many AI strategies have positive exploitability, meaning they leak EV that an observant opponent could capture.
Exploitability vs. Nash Equilibrium
Nash equilibrium strategies are unexploitable: they guarantee a minimum EV (or loss floor) regardless of opponent strategy. However, they may not maximize EV against weak opponents. Exploitability highlights the trade-off: a highly exploitative strategy might crush a fish but be destroyed by a balanced opponent. Modern poker training focuses on minimizing exploitability while still being profitable.
Measuring Exploitability
Exploitability is computed via game theory solvers. The algorithm finds the opponent's best response to a given strategy, then calculates the EV difference. For example, in a simplified hold'em spot, a solver might find that a player's preflop raising range has an exploitability of 15 bb/100 against a perfect opponent, indicating a significant leak.
Applications in Strategy
- GTO (Game Theory Optimal) play aims for zero exploitability, often approximated in practice.
- Exploitative play intentionally deviates from GTO to profit from opponent leaks, but increases exploitability.
- Balancing blends value and bluffs to reduce exploitability, making it harder for opponents to profitably counter.
