On the flop, a middle position player, after facing a preflop raise and a flop bet, performs a fourth bet 4-bet on a dry board.

Term Analysis: MP Flop 4-Bet Dry

Position

MP (Middle Position) refers to the middle position, typically UTG+1 in a 6-handed table or UTG+2 in a 9-handed table. This seat is between early and late positions, with a relatively central action order, but may still lack positional advantage in the early stages after the flop.

Flop 4-Bet

A 4-bet usually refers to the fourth raise preflop, but here it specifically denotes a 4-bet on the flop. Typical scenario: Preflop, a player raises, another player 3-bets; after the flop, the original raiser leads out (called a lead bet or continuation bet, c-bet), then the other player raises (equivalent to a flop 3-bet), and the MP player re-raises, forming a flop 4-bet.

Dry Board

A dry board refers to a flop where the three cards have weak connectivity, making it difficult to form straight or flush draws. For example: K♠7♦2♣. Such boards generally favor players who had a range advantage preflop, since drawing possibilities are low and made hands hold more value.

Strategic Implications

MP Flop 4-Bet Dry usually indicates holding a strong made hand (such as top pair top kicker or better), intending to immediately raise to build the pot and compress the opponent's drawing range or force folds. Because the board is dry, opponents find it difficult to continue with draws, giving this raise strong deterrent power. At the same time, MP needs to be cautious, as there are still later-position players yet to act; if a later player holds a strong hand, they may re-raise.

Application Scenarios

  • Example: Preflop MP limps, on the flop the early position player bets, a late position player raises, and MP then 4-bets to indicate a very strong hand.
  • Typical hands: top set, top two pair, top pair top kicker with a backdoor draw, etc.

Considerations

  • Frequency should not be too high, otherwise opponents can counter effectively.
  • Adjust based on opponent tendencies; if the opponent is passive, you can increase the frequency of value raises.
