MP Fold to 3-Bet

In No-Limit Texas Hold'em, the frequency at which a middle position MP player folds to a 3-Bet after opening for a raise.

Meaning and Importance

MP Fold to 3-Bet is a key statistic that measures the defensive tendencies of a middle-position player when facing an aggressive 3-Bet. It is typically displayed as a percentage in poker software such as Hold'em Manager and PokerTracker. A high fold percentage indicates that the player is prone to folding to 3-Bets from middle position, allowing opponents to steal the pot. A low fold percentage suggests the player frequently calls or 4-Bets in response.

How It Is Calculated

This statistic is based on all hands where the player open-raises from MP and then faces a 3-Bet from an opponent. The formula is: number of times the player folds to a 3-Bet ÷ total number of times they face a 3-Bet × 100%. A sufficient sample size (e.g., 100+ instances) is generally required for the stat to be meaningful.

Strategic Applications

  • Against opponents with a high fold rate: In favorable positions (e.g., BTN, CO), you can 3-Bet a wide range against an MP open-raise, exploiting their willingness to fold and taking down the pot immediately.
  • Against opponents with a low fold rate: Be cautious with thin-value 3-Bets, as the opponent is likely to defend frequently, reducing the success of 3-Bet bluffs. Such players are more likely to call or 4-Bet, so you need a stronger value range.
  • Adjusting your own play: As an MP player, your ideal MP Fold to 3-Bet should balance protecting your open-raising range with avoiding excessive folds. A typical range is 25%–45%, but this depends on the game environment and opponent skill level. Too high and you become exploitable; too low and you may end up in unfavorable calling or 4-Bet situations.
