MP Fold to Check-Raise

MP Fold to Check-Raise

Term: MP Fold to Check-Raise On the flop or turn, the frequency with which the middle position player folds when facing a check-raise from an opponent.

Overview

MP Fold to Check-Raise is a statistic in poker tracking software, usually expressed as a percentage. It measures the probability that a player in middle position (MP), generally the two seats after the under-the-gun position at a 9-handed table, folds after facing a check-raise when they were the initial bettor or raiser on the flop or turn.

Statistical Significance

  • Value for Aggressors: A high fold rate (e.g., over 70%) indicates that the MP player easily folds to check-raises. Aggressors can exploit this by frequently check-raising to take down pots, especially when holding draws or weak made hands.
  • Implication for MP Players: If this statistic is too high, the player is vulnerable to exploitation. MP players should adjust their range by calling or re-raising more often with strong hands, while reducing continuation bets with weak hands.
  • Balanced Strategy: In theory, a GTO strategy requires this statistic to stay within a certain range to prevent frequent bluffs. In practice, low-stakes players tend to fold too much, while higher stakes play is closer to equilibrium.

Influencing Factors

  • Board Texture: On wet boards (e.g., straight draw boards), check-raises often represent strong made hands or semi-bluffs, leading to a naturally higher fold rate for MP; on dry boards, the fold rate is lower.
  • Opponent Tendencies: If an opponent rarely check-raises as a bluff, MP should tend to trust and fold; conversely, if the opponent bluffs frequently, MP should decrease their fold rate.
  • Position and Stack Depth: MP has an advantage when in later position, but effective stack depth also influences decisions when facing a raise after a check. With deep stacks, MP may call more often with draws, thereby lowering the fold rate.

Application Example

Suppose an MP player makes a continuation bet on the flop, and the big blind check-raises. If MP's Fold to Check-Raise is 60%, that means they will fold in this situation 60% of the time. An aggressor knowing this can execute a check-raise with any two cards, and as long as the bet size is reasonable, they will show an immediate profit.

Notes

This statistic requires a sufficient sample size (usually recommended over a thousand hands) to be statistically meaningful. Additionally, standards vary by stakes and game type (e.g., cash games vs. tournaments), so it should be analyzed in conjunction with the opponent's overall style.
