Middle Position on Rainbow Board

Position and Board Definition

Middle Position (MP) is the seat after the hijack (HJ) in a 6-handed or 9-handed table, typically the fifth or sixth to act (after UTG). Rainbow Board refers to a flop where all three cards are of different suits, e.g., A♠ K♥ J♣. This board eliminates the possibility of a flush draw on the flop, but may contain straight draws or pairs.

Strategic Implications

MP's strategy on a rainbow board depends on the flop structure. Without flush draws, players' ranges focus more on pairs and straight draws. MP typically has a wider range including high pairs, medium pairs, suited connectors, and some AX hands. Rainbow boards reduce board connectivity, so MP can c-bet more aggressively, especially when the flop structure favors high cards (e.g., A-K-8), allowing MP to represent strong pairs or top pair for value bets or bluffs.

Example

Assume a 6-handed table, flop J♠ 7♦ 2♣ (rainbow board). A player in MP holds A♠K♥. This board has no flush draws, and J, 7, 2 have large gaps with few straight draws. MP can c-bet because their range may include JX, 77, 22, and high pairs, making it difficult for opponents to assess their exact hand strength.

Notes

A rainbow board is not completely safe: straight draws (e.g., flop 8-9-10) still require caution. On rainbow boards, MP players should leverage their positional advantage and range advantage to apply pressure, but if the board is very wet (e.g., 8-9-10 consecutive), they need to be more cautious in pot control.
