MP Probe Bet
MP Probe Bet
Term: Middle Position Probe Bet MP Probe Bet On the flop or turn, a bet made by a player in middle position after the previous aggressor checks, aimed at testing opponents' hand strength or taking down the pot.
Overview
MP Probe Bet refers to a small bet made by a player in middle position (Middle Position, approximately seats 2-3 on a 3-5 person table) on the flop or turn, after the previous round's aggressor (usually the preflop raiser) has checked. This is a semi-bluff action aimed at gaining control of the pot or gathering information.
When to Use
- Preflop Raiser Checks: When the preflop raiser (usually in position or from the blinds) checks on the flop, it indicates they may have missed or are slow-playing. In this case, a middle position player with a draw or medium strength hand can make a probe bet to force a fold or reveal the opponent's hand strength.
- On the Turn: If both players checked the flop and the opponent checks again on the turn, MP can also make a probe bet, especially if the turn card changes the board in a way that could benefit their range.
Bet Sizing
Typically 30%-50% of the pot, a small bet to reduce risk while forcing weak hands to fold. If the opponent has a strong hand, they will often raise, allowing you to fold easily and avoid a larger loss.
Points to Note
- Frequency Control: Overusing this move loses credibility, and opponents may punish with raises.
- Specific Opponents: Most effective against tight-passive players (high fold-to-cbet); be cautious against loose-aggressive players.
- Position Impact: MP is a relatively disadvantaged position, so be careful post-flop to avoid being check-raised by players in the blinds.
Example
6-max table, blinds 10/20. Preflop: MP (Hero) raises to 60, Button calls, blinds fold. Flop: K♠ 8♦ 3♣. Hero checks, Button checks. Turn: 6♥. Hero bets 40 (pot 150). This is a typical MP Probe Bet, representing that Hero may be bluffing or holding a medium-strength hand, trying to test the Button's hand strength.
