Overview

MP Resteal refers to the action in no-limit Texas Hold'em where a player in Middle Position (MP), upon observing that a player in early position (UTG or HJ) is employing a steal strategy (i.e., raising with a wide range to try to win the blinds directly), counterattacks by 3-betting. The core objective is to leverage positional advantage and the opponent’s wide range, forcing the opponent to fold and win the pot, while also establishing an aggressive table image.

Applicable Scenarios

• Opponent Range Analysis: When an MP player assesses that the early-position raiser has a high steal frequency (e.g., often raising with weak hands from the small blind or early position) and a sufficiently high fold rate, the Resteal has positive expected value.
• Table Dynamics: On tables where opponents respect 3-bets and have high fold rates, MP Resteal is more effective; conversely, if opponents frequently call or re-raise, caution is needed.
• Own Hand Range: Typically executed with medium-strength hands (e.g., AJ, KQ, medium pairs) or a fully polarized range (e.g., AA, KK, AK for value, and marginal hands as bluffs).

Strategy Points

• Position: Although MP is not the most advantageous position, it still has an edge over early position because the CO and BU have yet to act, and their potential 4-bets or calls must be considered.
• 3-bet Size: Usually a standard 3-bet size (about 3–4 times the original raise); can be slightly larger if the blinds are aggressive.
• Subsequent Adjustments: If called, decide whether to continuation bet (c-bet) based on the flop structure; if facing a 4-bet, most bluffing ranges should fold, while value ranges should consider continuing.

Hidden Risks

• If the early-position raiser actually holds a strong hand (e.g., AA, KK), the Resteal may lead to significant losses.
• Overusing this move can cause opponents to lose trust and adjust their strategies to counter it.

Example

Assume blinds are 100/200. The MP player holds A♥Q♠. UTG raises to 600. The MP player observes that UTG has been stealing frequently recently, and thus 3-bets to 1800. If UTG folds, MP successfully wins the dead money (900) in the pot.
