MP River Single Raised Pot

In No-Limit Texas Hold'em, refers to the river action situation in a single-raised pot where the middle position MP player raised preflop and other players called.

Position and Pot Type

MP (Middle Position) typically refers to the third position to act in a six-handed game (after UTG, before CO), or the fifth to seventh positions in a nine-handed game. A single-raised pot (SRP) refers to a pot where there was only one raise preflop (usually 2-3 big blinds), all other players called, and no re-raise occurred.

Key Strategic Points

In an MP river single-raised pot, since the preflop raiser is in middle position, their range is usually tighter, containing high cards, pairs, and some suited connectors. On the river, the preflop raiser (MP) in position (if another player acts first) or out of position (if the opponent checks from the blinds) must make decisions based on board texture, opponent range, and betting history.

  • Preflop raiser: If the river improves their top pair or draw, consider a value bet; if the board is dangerous (e.g., straight or flush possible), be cautious and control the pot.
  • Caller: Players who called from the blinds or later positions typically have a wider range, and the river may have hit a concealed hand. Assess the credibility of the raiser's range to decide whether to call or raise.

Common Scenarios

Typical situation: An MP player holds AX suited, flops top pair, checks the turn, and the river completes the flush. MP can then bet half to two-thirds pot for value. If the opponent suddenly raises on the river, MP must consider whether the opponent holds a flush or a set.

This term is commonly used in strategy discussions to emphasize the influence of position, pot size, and action history on river decisions.
