MP VPIP
MP VPIP
Term: Middle Position Voluntary Put Money In Pot MP VPIP Refers to the percentage of times a player voluntarily puts money into the pot when in middle position MP, measuring how often they participate in hands from that specific position.
Definition
MP VPIP (Middle Position Voluntarily Put Money In Pot) is a statistical metric in Texas Hold'em used to evaluate a player's tendency to play from the middle position (typically UTG+1 in 6-max or UTG+2 and UTG+3 in full-ring games). It calculates the percentage of times a player voluntarily puts chips into the pot (e.g., calling, raising, excluding forced blinds) when in the middle position, relative to the total number of opportunities.
Difference from Overall VPIP
Overall VPIP reflects a player's frequency of entering the pot from all positions, whereas MP VPIP is limited to the middle position. Due to positional disadvantage (worse than late position but better than early position), this value is typically lower than the button or cutoff VPIP but higher than the UTG VPIP. For example, a tight-aggressive player with an overall VPIP of 20% might have an MP VPIP between 15% and 18%.
Common Interpretations
- Very Low (<10%): Usually represents an extremely tight player who only enters the pot with very strong hands, making them exploitable.
- Low (10%-15%): Common among tight-aggressive players with a narrow range, mostly playing pairs, high cards, and suited connectors.
- Moderate (15%-22%): Typical range for many regular players, including some medium hands like suited connectors and small pairs.
- High (>22%): May indicate a loose player who participates in too many hands from the middle position, making them vulnerable to re-raises from late position players.
Usage Suggestions
When analyzing opponents, MP VPIP can help assess their positional adaptability. If an opponent's MP VPIP is significantly above normal, consider 3-betting with a wider range or stealing blinds from late position. At the same time, adjust your own MP VPIP based on table dynamics to avoid being too rigid. Generally, in a full-ring game (9 players), an MP VPIP of 12%-18% is recommended, while in 6-max, it can be loosened to 15%-22%.
