MP WSD

MP WSD

Term: Middle Position Showdown Rate MP WSD Refers to the frequency or proportion of a player in Middle Position who enters the pot and plays all the way to showdown.

Overview

MP stands for Middle Position, and WSD stands for Went to Showdown. MP WSD is a statistical metric that measures the proportion of hands where a player, after entering a pot from middle position, actually reaches showdown. It is typically expressed as a percentage; for example, 30% means that out of all hands the player entered from middle position, 30% went to showdown.

Calculation

The formula for MP WSD is:

  • Numerator: Number of hands entered from middle position that ultimately reached showdown
  • Denominator: Total number of hands entered from middle position (excluding cases where the player folds pre-flop)

Note: This metric only counts hands where the player voluntarily entered the pot (e.g., calling, raising), and does not include forced entries from the blinds.

Strategic Significance

MP WSD reflects a player's aggression and hand quality from middle position:

  • High MP WSD (e.g., > 45%): Indicates that the player tends to take hands to showdown after entering from middle position, typically with a strong hand range or a tendency to call down. This may suggest insufficient aggression post-flop, potentially incurring extra costs when behind.
  • Low MP WSD (e.g., < 25%): Indicates that the player often folds on the flop or turn after entering from middle position, possibly holding a wide range but with weak post-flop execution, or a tendency to bet aggressively and force folds.

Usage Scenarios

MP WSD is often analyzed alongside VPIP (Voluntarily Put Money in Pot), PFR (Pre-Flop Raise), W$SD (Won Money at Showdown), and other data to evaluate a player's overall style in middle position. For example:

  • A player with high VPIP but low MP WSD often enters pots from middle position but folds quickly, possibly playing many marginal hands or attempting steals.
  • A player with high PFR and moderate MP WSD actively raises from middle position and still shows down a decent frequency, making their hand strength noteworthy.

Limitations

MP WSD is highly dependent on sample size; a sufficient number of hands (typically at least 500) is recommended for statistical significance. Additionally, this metric alone cannot fully reflect a player's true skill; it must be combined with post-flop actions (e.g., continuation bet frequency, turn fold rate) for a comprehensive assessment.
