In Omaha Hi-Lo (split-pot or 8-or-better), the nut low is the best possible low hand that can be made from the available community cards, using exactly two cards from a player's four-card hand and three from the board. A low hand must consist of five unpaired cards ranked 8 or lower (aces count as low). The nut low is the lowest possible combination under these constraints, typically A-2-3-4-5 (the wheel), but the exact nut low depends on which cards are on the board.
Determining the Nut Low
To find the nut low, you must consider which low cards are already on the board and then determine the best remaining low cards that can be combined to make the smallest high-card rank (when reading low hands from highest to lowest). For example, if the board shows A♠ 2♣ 7♦ K♠ Q♥, the nut low would be A-2-3-4-7 (using any 3 and 4 from hole cards, but note that 3 and 4 must be available). However, if the board contains A♠ 2♣ 3♦ 8♥ J♠, the nut low is A-2-3-4-8 (since the 4 is not on board). If the board has A♠ 2♣ 3♦ 4♥ K♠, the nut low is A-2-3-4-5 (wheel) because the 5 is not on board. If the board itself contains a low hand that is the best possible (e.g., A-2-3-4-5), then the nut low is that hand, but players must still use two hole cards, so no one can have the nut low if the board alone is the wheel unless a player holds exactly the right cards to make it.
Strategic Importance
Playing for the nut low is crucial in Omaha Hi-Lo because low hands that are not the nuts often lose to better lows. If you have a low draw that cannot improve to the nut low, you risk splitting the low pot at best or losing it entirely. Strong players focus on hands that can make the nut low (e.g., A-2, A-3, 2-3 with ace on board) or that have scoop potential (high and low). Overvaluing non-nut low hands is a common mistake.

Board: 2♠ 8♠ 3♥ J♣ A♦ Possible low: Any hand using two cards 4-7 to pair with A,2,3. The best low is A-2-3-4-5, so the nut low is A-2-3-4-5 if a player holds 4♠5♣ and uses the board's A,2,3. Without the 4 and 5, the nut low might be A-2-3-4-6 (if 4 is available but 5 is not).
