Overview
The Button (BTN) is the most advantageous position in Texas Hold'em because the player acts last on all postflop streets. Therefore, open raising from the button is the most common strategy among all positions.
Strategic Significance
The core purpose of a button open raise is stealing the blinds (Blind Steal). Since the small and big blinds are at a disadvantage by acting first postflop, the button's raise often forces the blinds to fold, winning the pot outright. Additionally, the button player can leverage positional advantage to bluff or value bet more effectively postflop.
Typical Raising Range
The button's open-raising range is typically wider than any other position. A standard range includes:
- All pocket pairs (22+)
- All suited Aces (A2s+) and some offsuit Aces (e.g., AJo+)
- All suited connectors (54s+) and some suited gappers (e.g., J9s, T8s)
- Some high cards (KQo, KJo, etc.) Overall, a balanced button open-raising range might be between 40%–60% of hands, depending on opponents and stack depth.
Raise Sizing
Button raise sizing is typically slightly smaller — for example, raising to 400 or 500 at blinds of 100/200 — to reduce the cost of stealing. However, sizing should be adjusted based on the blinds' calling tendencies: increase sizing if the blinds call frequently, and decrease it if they fold often.
Notes
- Avoid open-raising too frequently, or you risk being punished by re-raises (3-bets).
- Tighten your raising range when the blinds are aggressive 3-bettors.
- In multi-way pots, the button's open raise should place more emphasis on hand quality, as there are more callers behind.
