Probe Bet from SB

Term: Probe Bet from SB 小盲位试探下注 On the flop, when the player in the small blind checks to the big blind or early position player, they then bet a small amount to test the opponent's hand strength and contest the pot.

Overview

A Probe Bet from SB refers to a strategic bet made by the small blind on the flop. The typical scenario is: the small blind only completes the big blind or calls a raise preflop, and after the flop, the big blind (or an earlier position player) checks first. At this point, the small blind actively makes a small bet (about 30%-40% of the pot) to test whether the opponent holds a strong hand or made hand.

Purpose and Applicable Scenarios

  • Test hand strength: The small blind's hand is usually weak (e.g., a completed big blind range) and may have missed the flop. By making a small bet, the small blind forces the opponent to call or raise if they hold a medium-strength hand (such as top pair weak kicker, middle pair), thereby revealing information; if the opponent folds, the small blind wins the pot directly.
  • Compete for the pot: On low boards (e.g., rainbow low connected cards), the small blind might represent a flush draw or gutshot straight draw, and even without a made hand, can win by applying pressure on the opponent's fold equity.
  • Balance range: Mix bluff bets into the small blind's range to avoid always checking and then folding, making it harder for the big blind to exploit.

Notes

  • The bet size should be small enough to avoid unnecessary losses in the pot, but large enough (usually greater than 20% of the pot) to make it difficult for the opponent to call easily.
  • If the opponent is a tight-aggressive player, they are more likely to check strong hands to trap, making the probe bet less effective; against calling stations, reduce frequency.
  • Works better on low boards (e.g., flop 9-4-2 rainbow), as the big blind's range often includes many high cards that missed.

Example

  • Blinds 50/100, small blind holds 7♦8♦, big blind calls. Flop: J♥5♣2♠. Big blind checks. Small blind bets 120 (about 40% of the pot), big blind folds. Small blind wins the pot.
