Raise C-Bet from HJ

Raise C-Bet from HJ

HJ Raise C-Bet Refers to the action of a player who raised from the hijack HJ preflop, then raises against an opponent's continuation bet on the flop.

Concept

HJ (Hijack) is the second position to the right of the dealer in a six-handed or nine-handed table, making it a middle-late position. Raise C-Bet from HJ specifically refers to: after the HJ player raises preflop, if an opponent (usually the big blind or a caller) makes a continuation bet (C-Bet) on the flop, the HJ player chooses to raise instead of call or fold.

Usage Scenarios and Strategy

  • Value Raise: When the HJ player hits a strong hand on the flop (e.g., top pair with top kicker, two pair, a set) and believes the opponent's C-Bet range contains many weaker pairs or draws, raising can immediately extract value and control the pot size.
  • Bluff Raise: When the flop texture is unfavorable to the opponent's C-Bet range (e.g., a dry high-card board), or the HJ player holds a draw (e.g., an open-ended straight draw, flush draw), they can represent a strong hand by raising, forcing opponents to fold. Since the HJ's preflop raising range is typically wide, the raise may be perceived as a polarized range (strong value or pure bluff).
  • Position Advantage: The HJ is still out of position (relative to the button) after the flop, so raising can slow down the opponent's actions, forcing them to fold or call and then play from a disadvantageous position on the turn.

Notes

  • Opponent Type: Bluff raises are more effective against opponents who C-Bet frequently but fold often; value raises are preferable against opponents who rarely fold.
  • Flop Texture: On dry boards (e.g., K82 rainbow), small raises or even flat calls are better; on wet boards (e.g., 9♠8♠7♣), raising is riskier as opponents may hold strong draws.
  • Range Balance: To avoid being exploited, maintain a reasonable ratio between value raises and bluff raises, depending on your read of the opponent.

Example

Assume a six-handed table, blinds 100/200. HJ holds A♠K♠ and raises to 600, big blind calls. Flop: K♥7♦2♣. Big blind bets 800. HJ can raise to 2200, representing a value raise with top pair top kicker, while also denying the possibility of a backdoor flush bluff.
