Raising the flop continuation bet made by the preflop aggressor while seated in the UTG+1 position (early position).
Overview
Raising a continuation bet (C-bet) from UTG+1 is a play used in no-limit hold'em, typically when the player in UTG+1 called a preflop raise from an earlier position (e.g., UTG) or from a later position, and then faces a C-bet on the flop. UTG+1 is an early position, so the range for raising is generally strong, but it can also be part of a balanced strategy with some bluffs.
When to Raise a C-Bet from UTG+1
Value Raises
- Strong made hands: Top pair with a good kicker, two pair, sets, or better. Raising protects against draws and builds the pot.
- Top pair with a flush draw: A semi-bluff that can improve on later streets.
Bluff Raises
- Low-equity hands with backdoor draws: For example, a gutshot straight draw with backdoor flush potential. These hands have little showdown value but can improve.
- Dry boards: On boards like K-7-2 rainbow, the preflop raiser's C-bet range is wide. A raise from UTG+1 can represent a strong hand and force folds from many unimproved hands.
Considerations
- Position: UTG+1 will be out of position after the flop if the preflop raiser calls the raise. This makes it harder to bluff on later streets. Therefore, bluff raises should be used sparingly and with hands that have equity.
- Opponent’s C-bet frequency: Against an opponent who C-bets too often, raising can exploit that tendency. Against a tight C-bettor, raises should be weighted toward value.
- Board texture: Coordinated boards favor the caller’s range (UTG+1) since they may have more suited connectors. On dry boards, the preflop raiser’s range has an advantage.
Example
Hero in UTG+1 calls a raise from UTG. Flop: J♠ 8♣ 4♦. UTG bets 2/3 pot. Hero can raise with hands like A-J, 8-8, 4-4, or J-8 for value, and with hands like 9-7 (open-ended) or A♣ 3♣ (backdoor) as bluffs.
