Resteal from HJ

HJ位反偷

Term: HJ位反偷(Resteal from HJ) In the HJ position (three positions from the button), a 3-bet or 4-bet countermove against a steal raise from the UTG or early position.

Context: Term article: Resteal from HJ (反偷)

Overview

A Resteal from HJ occurs when a player in the HJ position (Hijack, i.e., the second seat to the right of the dealer) faces a blind-stealing raise from an earlier position (e.g., UTG, UTG+1) and responds with a re-raise to counterattack. Typically, blind-stealing refers to players in late position raising with a wide range to win the blinds, while restealing exploits the fact that early-position players may have a weaker range and a higher fold equity. The resteal is executed via a 3-bet (re-raise) or even a 4-bet (counter-raise) to seize the pot's initiative.

Conditions for Implementation

  • Opponent Range Analysis: The early-position stealer's raising range often includes many weak hands (e.g., small pocket pairs, suited connectors), and their fold rate to 3-bets is typically high. The effectiveness of a resteal decreases against tight-aggressive players, but increases against aggressive players who frequently steal.
  • Position Advantage: The HJ is relatively close to the dealer, but players behind (CO (Cutoff) and BTN (button)) may also join. Therefore, it is essential to assess the reactions of later players to avoid being 4-bet by them or ending up in a disadvantageous position after a call.
  • Hand Strength Requirements: A typical resteal range includes strong hands (TT+, AQ+) as well as some medium hands (e.g., A5s, K9s) to balance the range and exploit fold equity. The specific range should be adjusted based on opponent tendencies and stack depth.
  • Stack Depth: Effective stacks of 30-100 BB are generally suitable for restealing. For deeper or shallower stacks, the strategy should be adjusted (e.g., call more often with deep stacks, or shove with shallow stacks).

Example

Assume blinds are 100/200, effective stack 30,000. UTG raises to 500, and the HJ holds 9♠8♠. If the HJ judges that UTG has a high steal frequency and high fold rate, the HJ can 3-bet to around 1,500, aiming to win the pot immediately or apply post-flop pressure. If the opponent 4-bets, the decision to call or fold depends on their range.

Notes

  • Do not overuse resteals, as opponents may adjust.
  • Against tight-passive players, the resteal is less profitable; proceed with caution.
  • Consider the tendencies of players behind (CO, BTN) to avoid being exploited.
