River Delayed C-Bet on Paired Board
When the flop shows a paired board, a delayed continuation bet made on the river.
Concept
A delayed c-bet refers to a continuation bet made on the turn or river after checking the flop. When the flop is a paired board (i.e., at least one card matches another in rank, e.g., K♠K♥7♦), the motivation and effect of this strategy can change.
Strategic Considerations
- Characteristics of a paired board: A paired board may help opponents hit a full house or trips, while reducing the probability of drawing hands (e.g., straight draws, flush draws).
- Advantages of a delayed bet: Checking the flop can control the pot and avoid being raised out of position; by the river, the pot is larger, the proportion of drawing hands in the opponent's range is lower, and value bets are more efficient.
- River action: Bets are typically made on the river, as it is the final street and opponents are more likely to fold top pair or hands on a paired board.
Example
Assume the flop is Q♠Q♥7♦, and the player checks the flop. The turn is 3♣ and is also checked. The river is 2♥. At this point, the player can make a delayed c-bet with a medium-strength hand (e.g., 88) or a value hand (e.g., KQ).
Notes
- Consider the opponent's range: If the opponent frequently calls post-flop, a delayed bet may be ineffective.
- A paired board can reduce the value of big pairs (e.g., AA), so bet sizing should be adjusted carefully.
