SB 30bb Bubble Play

SB 30bb Bubble Play

Playing and decision-making principles when the small blind has about 30 big blinds during the tournament bubble phase.

Overview

SB 30bb Bubble Play refers to the strategy for a player in the small blind position holding approximately 30 big blinds (bb) during the bubble phase of a tournament (i.e., close to the money with few eliminations remaining). At this stage, due to bubble pressure, players' decisions must account for both ICM (Independent Chip Model) factors and positional disadvantage.

Bubble Phase Characteristics

  • Near the money, all surviving players have a strong desire to enter the money, and aggression typically decreases.
  • Big stack players may exploit the pressure to attack small stacks, while medium stacks need to be cautious to avoid elimination.
  • The small blind, due to the worst post-flop position and having to act first, is more vulnerable to attacks during the bubble.

Characteristics of 30bb Stack Size

  • Approximately 30bb falls into the medium stack range—not yet desperate as a short stack, but not deep enough to withstand frequent preflop all-in confrontations.
  • Various preflop actions are possible: raise, call, 3-bet, all-in, etc., but range adjustments must be strict.

Strategy Key Points

  • Preflop Raising: When the small blind faces the button or big blind, raise ranges should be tightened to avoid pressure from big stack players who may 3-bet or shove. Generally, strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) should be prioritized; a few speculative hands may be mixed in, but opponent tendencies must be considered.
  • Facing All-Ins: If the small blind raises and then faces an all-in from the big blind or button, the calling range must be very strict—typically only JJ+, AK, avoiding marginal hands.
  • Stealing and Re-Stealing: Moderate stealing is acceptable, but caution is needed against big stack players; if opponents steal frequently, use TT+, AJ+, etc., to 3-bet or shove for re-steals.
  • ICM Pressure Adjustment: During the bubble, avoid large pots against big stack players; even with slightly stronger hands, consider folding to preserve equity. Prioritize squeezing against small stack players.

Example

  • Typical scenario: Bubble phase, small blind holds 30bb, button big stack folds, big blind also around 30bb. SB holds 66. Consider raising 2.5bb; if big blind shoves, fold, as 66 is outside the calling range.
  • If SB holds AK, raise and comfortably call an all-in.
