SB River 3-Bet Pot

SB River 3-Bet Pot

SB River 3-Bet Pot Refers to a pot where the player in the small blind has made a third bet i.e., re-raised an opponent's bet on the river, after already having raised or re-raised preflop, on the flop, or on the turn.

Term Explanation

"SB River 3-Bet Pot" is a poker term describing a specific in-game scenario. "SB" stands for Small Blind, "River" refers to the river betting round, "3-Bet" indicates the third bet or re-raise (typically, the first preflop raise is considered a 1-bet, a re-raise is a 2-bet, and another re-raise is a 3-bet), and "Pot" refers to the pot.

This term emphasizes how the pot was built: preflop, the small blind may have raised or called and then re-raised; then multiple betting actions occurred on the flop and turn; finally on the river, the small blind player re-raised (i.e., 3-bet) an opponent's bet, creating this pot.

Typical Scenario

For example, preflop, the small blind player makes an initial raise (2-bet) and the big blind calls. Both players check the flop. On the turn, the small blind bets, the big blind raises, and the small blind calls. On the river, the big blind bets, and the small blind then re-raises (i.e., 3-bet). At this point, the pot is a "SB River 3-Bet Pot."

Strategic Implications

This term is often used to analyze a small blind player's raising range and hand strength on the river. Because the small blind is out of position (the worst position postflop) and the pot is large, their river 3-bet usually indicates very strong hand strength, such as the nuts or high-strength sets, straights, etc. Occasionally, players may use this spot to bluff, but the frequency is typically low.

Notes

In this context, "3-Bet" refers to a re-raise of a previous raise in a postflop scenario, not the preflop definition. A river 3-bet often means the pot is already large, and the player's action is highly polarized (either a strong hand or a bluff).
