In the small blind position, after a bet and raise on the river, a strategy of re-raising using a fixed range primarily of strong hands.

Overview

SB River Squeeze Static is an advanced post-flop strategy in Texas Hold'em, primarily applied on the river in multi-way pots. The term consists of three parts: SB (Small Blind), River, Squeeze (typically referring to a large re-raise by a third player after a bet and a raise, aiming to force middle players to fold), and Static (meaning the raising range is pre-set and not adjusted based on opponent dynamics).

Strategy Principle

On the river, if an early position player bets, a middle position player raises, and the small blind holds a strong hand (such as the nuts or an extremely strong made hand), they can choose to go all-in or make a large raise. This raise aims to achieve two goals:

  • Extract value: Extract more chips from players who call frequently (especially the middle raiser).
  • Compress ranges: Force the original bettor to fold medium-strength hands, thereby simplifying subsequent action.

"Static" emphasizes that the small blind's raising range is predetermined, typically containing only the top hands (like full houses, flushes, straights, etc.), rather than adjusting based on opponent tendencies or historical data. This makes the strategy easy to execute but sacrifices flexibility.

Typical Scenario

  • Few actions on the flop and turn, leading to a multi-way pot on the river.
  • Early position bets about 2/3 of the pot, middle position raises about 3x the bet.
  • Small blind holds an unbeatable hand such as quads, a royal flush, or a full house, then employs a static squeeze, going all-in or making a large raise.

Notes

This strategy ignores opponent's possible fold tendencies or bluff frequencies, making it suitable for opponents whose ranges are more value-heavy and rarely bluff. If opponents are good at adjusting, the small blind should switch to a dynamic range (e.g., adding bluffs).
