Starting Chips

起始筹码

Context: Term: 起始筹码(Starting Chips) The initial number of chips each player receives at the start of a poker tournament.

Context: Term article: Starting Chips

Starting Chips are the number of chips each participant receives before the first hand of a poker tournament or SNG (Single Table Tournament). This value is clearly specified by the event organizer in the tournament structure sheet and is typically set based on the buy-in amount, tournament type, and blind structure.

Importance

Starting chips directly influence tournament strategy and pace. The chip count relative to the blinds determines a player's flexibility and aggression. For example, in a deep stacked tournament (large starting chips, roughly 100 times the big blind or more), players can execute a wider variety of strategies such as limping, raising, and bluffing; whereas in a shallow stack tournament (small starting chips, roughly 30 times the big blind or less), players are often forced to adopt aggressive shove-or-fold tactics.

Common Standards

  • Live Tournaments: Standard tournaments typically have starting chips ranging from 10,000 to 50,000, with blind levels increasing gradually.
  • Online Tournaments: Online turbo events may have starting chips as low as 1,000 or 500, while high buy-in events can exceed 100,000.
  • Satellites: Tournaments that award entries to larger events usually have smaller starting chips to speed up the process.
  • Cash Games: Starting chips are generally not fixed; players can buy in themselves, but there is typically a minimum and maximum buy-in agreed upon.

Impact on Strategy

The number of starting chips determines a player's style in the early stages of the tournament. With deep stacks, players can play more hands, leveraging position and skill; with shallow stacks, hand selection becomes stricter, focusing on shove timing and ICM (Independent Chip Model) considerations.

Example

Suppose a $100 buy-in MTT (Multi-Table Tournament) has starting chips of 10,000 and blinds of 25/50. The effective stack depth is 200 big blinds, which is a deep stack, allowing players to employ a variety of plays. If the starting chips were 1,000 with the same blinds of 25/50, the effective stack depth would be only 20 big blinds, forcing players to act quickly.
